Dr. Victor J. Ramraj Memorial SAGE Scholarship

A special opportunity in 2017

Dr. Victor J. Ramraj’s love for Guyana and his home island of Wakenaam inspired his family to provide a full SAGE scholarship in his honor.  If a qualified applicant from Wakenaam is found and selected from the applicant pool, this scholarship will be available to attend the University of Guyana.

Dr. Victor J. Ramraj was born on the island of Wakenaam, loved his home, and maintained a deep commitment to Guyana throughout his life.  Dr. Ramraj completed his secondary education at St. Stanislaus College in Georgetown, and then attended the University College of the West Indies (London) – now UWI, Mona Campus – in Kingston, Jamaica, where he achieved his BA in English literature.  Dr. Ramraj received his doctorate degree at the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and then joined the Department of English at the University of Calgary where he served for 44 years and achieved great success, distinguishing himself as an expert in postcolonial studies and Canadian literature and authoring numerous books.

Dr. Ramraj always maintained a strong connection to Wakenaam Island, traveling to Guyana often with his family and concentrating his research and writing on the Caribbean area and culture. Not long before he passed, Dr. Ramraj presented a state lecture in Guyana on the first Canadian Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Alice Munro.

Dr. Ramraj’s commitment to Guyana and his success both embody several of SAGE’s principles, and SAGE is honored to be able to offer this scholarship on behalf of Dr. Ramraj and his family.  The application process will be the same for the traditional SAGE Scholarship and to be qualified an applicant must meet all of SAGE’s criteria.
