About University of Guyana
University of Guyana is located in the nation’s capital, Georgetown. It is the country’s most prestigious university and offers a wide array of academic programs from law, medicine, and education.
In order to gain admission to the University of Guyana, a student must pass several subjects at the CXC/CSEC examination, standard exams across the Caribbean taken during the last year of secondary school.
A year of tuition at the University of Guyana is $700 (US). The per capita income (GNI) of Guyana is $900(US) making it difficult for qualified Guyanese to pay for tertiary education. [1] In 2005, 15.8% of Guyanese students who took the CXC/CSEC exams met the entry requirements for the University of Guyana, but only 7.9% actually attended. [2] Many students wait up to several years before starting their tertiary study, if they can afford it.
According to the University of Guyana’s strategic development plan, “The greatest weakness by far is the low financial resources that fund the University’s operation and that has resulted in a number of secondary negative effects including: student tuition fees below the economic level.”
The university offers certificates/diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s/post-graduate diplomas in schools of:
Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry
School of Education & Humanities
Faculty of Health Sciences
